Indie comics massacre

Or Else #3

Kevin Huizenga’s little book. I liked #2 more - these stories turn out to be reprints from 1999 and 2000. The three-page “A Short Stroll,” an adaptation of one of Kafka’s diary entries, is the standout.

Optic Nerve #10

This is why I went to the store in the first place. You cannot fuck with Adrian Tomine’s draftsmanship. However…the second part of this three part story felt ever so slightly forced. I’m sure I’ll change my mind when 11 comes out and ties up the loose ends.

Big Questions #7

This is the first thing I’ve ever read by Anders Nilsen, and it’s great. Flipping through it, I was worried by the partial lack of dialogue - who wants to pay $5 for something you can read in two minutes? - but my concern was misplaced. I wish I could find Big Questions 1-6, but they’re sold out on The Holy Consumption website.

King-Cat Comics & Stories #62 and 63

I previously read #64, Porcellino’s moving tribute to his father. In these two issues, he seems like a depressed guy turning to Zen to get through - there’s nothing overtly sad, just odes to nature and little quote scrapings: “Vimalakirti said: I’m sick because the world is sick,” etc. When I read 64, I thought the numbering was artificially high, but it turns out he’s been doing this for fifteen years and there really are 61 other issues - wow. He has a compilation book out called Perfect Example that I’ll buy with my next Amazon referral credit.

Peepshow #14
Yeah, don’t get your hopes up. I was talking to the guy behind the counter, who knows Joe Matt and said he nudged him about the new issue to no result. Said he’s lazy. Oh well, maybe one year.
