Contrapasso
- All the Italians I know are really into Boccaccio. Nino said to me that Dante “knew everyone and the divine” where B. was of the earth, but thinks their brilliance is equal. Anyway, check out the Decameron Web if you’re into medieval Italian lit.
- Thanks to a certain someone I have an uh, subscription to The Economist so I can read articles online, which is super plus plus, rocking my socks. They’re wrong about some things (like the war in Iraq (^George)), right about others:
The Economist opposes the death penalty: state-sponsored killing is inhuman, its effectiveness as a deterrent is at best unproven and it is no less prone to miscarriages of justice than more easily reversible sentences.
- I don’t speak Spanish and feel pretty dumb about it – almost every Spanish-speaker I meet in LA tells me not to worry – Maria, the nice lady at the post office, the Mestizo dude with the motorbike, etc. I keep hearing about this “second reconquista,” the idea of a retaking of the American Southwest by Mexicans. They never talk to the gringo about it, that’s for sure. C’mon, tell me the plan! I’m kidding, but this is no small thing: everyone says that Bush is going to totally push the immigration/guest worker deal as a red/blue wedge issue in 2006. If only Mexico were as developed as Canada, there would be no border issues. I’m a Big America (not just North!) reunificationist – fuck it, let’s have three official languages.
- I really don’t like talking politics, but I would like to point out that it’s pretty flimsy for Republicans to be all mad at illegal immigration and, like, totally fine with outsourcing. Typically illegals new to the country work shit jobs no one else wants to do except maybe the out-of-work mid-level computer programmers who lost their gigs to highly educated middle class Indians in Bangalore.
- I think I’m going to read The Purpose-Driven Life, for real. It’s sold 25 million, MILLION copies. However, I draw the line at setting foot in a megachurch. I wonder if France has hyperchurches. (“Hyperpower”- word nerd joke – anyone?)
