I’m watching Emmy screeners of The Closer – I’m through the first disc, which was the pilot and two more episodes. Right inside the fancy slipcase is a quote from the New York Post: “Make no mistake, what is very good about The Closer is the charismatic [Kyra] Sedgwick.” And I imagine the rest of that quote was “and nothing else.” It’s a throwback to harmless 80s cop shows, which is kind of fun, but not meaningful. My gold standard for cop procedurals is Homicide, and this show is way sub-Homicide. The whole cast is made up of good solid actors, but they’re not allowed much personality – only Sedgwick’s character is allowed to be interesting. She has a sweet tooth – takes candy corn from a dish on a murdered girl’s bedstand – and a verrrrrrry patient FBI love interest. Litwack Entertainment Weekly: C+.
