THE iPHONE RUNS OS X

OH MY GOD - CLICK HERE FOR DEMOS

ZOMFG

Update: maybe I should be more serious. It’s exciting, yes, but there are a few small details that give me pause:

  • 2G isn’t fast enough. The map demos at MacWorld were done over WiFi. Cingular also charges a lot for data, although I expect they’ll have a special plan in June. Special phone, special plan.
  • Related to the low cell bandwidth, there’s no video iChat. In the next revision, surely.
  • It doesn’t have a GPS module.
  • You can’t make iTunes store purchases from the phone. Everything gets synced from your desktop. Concession to Cingular or just an unfinished loose end? Don’t know. Also, the ability to use mp3s as ringers as yet has gone unstated.
  • Anyone should be able to make widgets, but I get the sense that applications will be a walled garden. We’ll see.
  • You can’t change the battery, so the units are disposable. I understand and agree with the Apple aesthetic imperative, gotta just keep that at the back of your mind.
  • According to David Pogue’s hands-on, the screen is streaky. Okay, to be expected. Is it scratchy?

Whatever. The interface is amazing and the level of polish is heretofore unseen in a phone. It looks like it’s come back from the future to elevate our game. My contract with Sprint is up in a year; my Treo looks exhausted; let’s see if I can wait six months. Because that’s what I’m good at. Waiting.
