My alabaster queen

  • I’m bummed out: I just watched the last episodes of my favorite not-American TV dramas, jPod and Skins. Skins will continue, but with a new cast, drag. jPod I’m so bummed out about that I read the source novel today. It was good, but the show is better. Maybe six new episodes of Morgan & Webb’s Peep Show will come along and cheer me up.
  • Speaking of Douglas Coupland, maybe he and Warren Ellis should collaborate on something. They seem kind of aligned.
  • I find myself wanting to go to Denmark. Obviously I didn’t stop reading Monocle, as promised.
  • I should go back and take a picture, but I drove past a kind of dilapidated house this morning that had a sign out front that said Psychic Readings / Life Coach.
  • Has anyone out there bought a custom softshell from Beyond?
  • Just the tip of my nose is sore, on the left side. What happened? Did I bruise it? How would something like that even happen?
  • I’ve been reading this Perec book of essays, Species of Spaces and Other Places, and I can highly recommend it. Highly. Nobody does it like Perec did it. I’ve basically been flipping through it and reading at random, which I can’t help but think is a method he would have approved of.
  • I do not think he would have been as okay ending a sentence with a preposition, but then again you just don’t do that in French. Maybe someone could regex Life in the original and get back to me.
  • God, I’m hungry. It’s 10:15pm and I haven’t eaten dinner. I don’t even know what I want. Well, I sort of want a hamburger. I want the kind of hamburger that doesn’t seem to exist here: 2/3rds lb. ground beef (not “hamburger meat;” the difference is added fat) cooked medium rare on a seeded Kaiser roll, Jersey beefsteak tomatoes from 1988, sweet onions, lettuce, ketchup, no cheese, no pickles, Coke, deli fries. I last had such a hamburger in 1988. Every fucking burger in LA has thin patties except Father’s Office; I suppose I should go there at 3 on a Tuesday sometime. (I think the thin patties thing is the In-N-Out influence. In-N-Out is fresh and good, but it’s not a panacea.)
  • While on the subject of Jersey food, I could also go for a calzone aka cal-ZO-nay aka folded pizza.
  • I was going to try to get through this entry w/o talking about technology, but I can’t help it: I’ve had this Sony PSP for about a week now, and I like it well enough so that it’s making me sad how Sony’s blowing it. My theory is that it’s pocketable devices that become truly personal - RAZR, iPod, Nuvi. The PSP could be in that category, but Sony needs to shrink it (make the screen smaller, keep the resolution), cut out UMD, and partner with Amazon on an iTunes clone for DRM-free music, movies (with DRM, mind you), and Kindle format ebook compatibility. Compete, you fools!
