I am one of the few who have destroyed not just one, but two AlphaSmarts in the line of duty (although I later cobbled the two corpses into one working device). My Neo is my fourth AlphaSmart. They are not quite totally indestructible. However, as a testament to their durability, my first AlphaSmart continues to work just fine in the hands of my two kids, and has done for years ... so this grown-up person managed an act of destruction beyond the reach of a six-year-old. I consider that a triumph, albeit a dubious one.

Here are a couple tricks that may help you get more out of your AlphaSmart Neo, if you haven't already found them. First, the underscore character is a command that turns on and off italics when you transfer text to most word processors. So, _this_ would transfer as this (assuming HTML is enabled on this comment box). The same thing is true of the * (asterisk) symbol, which turns on and off boldface. Hence *this* would transfer as this. I have not found a command to turn on underlining.

Having owned and used the Alphasmart 2000 and 3000 models, I have a unique perspective on the Neo. I like it a lot - it's a significant upgrade to the AlphaSmart 3000. You can read my review here: http://www.kuraoka.com/adblog/nov08.html#111608

I agree very much with all your points.

I've just ordered a Neo, though, because I have a Dana, and the screen contrast is abysmal. And I'm told that the main reason for this is the backlight. The backlight film is not reflective.

I also need no distractions, and I like writing in cafes.
