Uncle Acid and The Deadbeats – Ritual Knife: Also a great album, came out on CD-R. Copies of the subsequent limited-to-150 vinyl have sold for >$500!
Red Fang – Into The Eye: Hopefully these guys show up on Portlandia season 2.
Mastodon – Stargasm: The tightest metal band of late?
Wolvhammer – Shadowhorn: Nasty.
Dark Castle – Seeing Through Time: I thought their first record was meh, but they’ve improved a LOT.
Tombs – Silent World: Lots of heat for Tombs. I hear echoes of Fugazi.
Hammers of Misfortune – The Grain: Beautiful song. Melodic metal from SF.
Nine Inch Nails – Theme For Tetsuo The Bullet Man: Okay, so NIN isn’t really metal. Still great though.
Blood Stain Child – Stargazer: Out of nowhere Japanese metal/techno fusion band internet peeps are going crazy for. Heavy J-Pop component. RIYL Spawn OST.
Wolves In The Throne Room – Permanent Changes In Consciousness: The album is as good as Pitchfork says.
Alcest – Percées De Lumière: Epic French band, new album due out in 2012.
Moonsorrow – Huuto: Possibly even more epic Finnish band, their new record is their best.

90s nostalgia is everywhere, and I have succumbed to it…in a very weird way. The modern rock radio station I grew up with in Philly and loved with my whole heart was 103.9 WDRE, on the air from 1992 to 1997 when it was bought by Radio One and turned into a solid if unremarkable hip-hop station. I was 13 in 1992, and an alternative radio station playing The Breeders and The Cure and Nirvana was exaaaaaactly what I needed. I was tremendously bummed out when it shut down, but by then I was at college in another state with its own robust music culture – Roadrunner, roadrunner, gonna drive past the Stop & Shop – which helped.

Anyway, this is a roundabout way of saying I found a bunch of pristine WDRE tags and ‘DJ’ed’ a block of cheesy modern rock songs I love, complete with vintage commercials and concert announcements for local bands (Love Seed Momma Jump, holla). The conceit is I’m filling in for another night shift DJ at 2am in 1997. My girlfriend’s in law school, what can I tell you.

So every two years I make a Wu-Tang Clan recorded-from-the-radio style pause tape. I get to this point where I need the Wu, you know what I mean? There’s a protean heap of material out there – more of a pit than a chamber – and I reach into it and shape fifty, fifty five minutes into something that fills that need. WU-TANG IS FOREVER!

3 The Ponys – I Wanna Fuck You: Not necessarily conflicting impulses. First heard posted by Finny over at El Stence. I change one word and sing this to my cat – “I wanna pet you! I wanna put my hands all over you!”
4 Warm Ghost – Without A Dancer: I guess “ghost” is the new whatever the thing after “wolf” was for indie bands. Kompact-y.
5 Nicolas Makelberge – Dying In Africa: Don’t let the synth fool you because this is a bitter, bitter jam.
6 DJ Elmoe – Whea Yo Ghost At, Whea Yo Dead Man: This track, the first off µ-Ziq’s Bangs & Works compilation, really opened my eyes to juke/footwork. The sample is Vangelis.
7 Childish Gambino – Freaks and Geeks: Troy from Community stepped up his rap game – punchlines from a comedian, surprise! The casual misogyny is pose – let’s remember this is a dude who takes his fellow female castmembers to APC for style emergencies.
8 Lil B feat. Tony Yayo – #based: I’m still working on understanding the Based God. Meanwhile, Yayo turns in the most interesting verse of his career.
9 The Books – A Cold Freezin’ Night: The video for this is bzzzonkers. Found audio arrangements are close to my heart.
10 The Reborn Identity – Black Hole A Go Go: Mashups are mayflies but this one stayed, at least for me.
11 Sly and the Family Stone – I Cannot Make It: I’m not saying shit about this slice of molybdenum gorg except if you don’t have the album go get it.
12 Gene Chandler – Rainbow ’65: Gene Chandler is great on record and everything but his live performances are solid gold. In Chicago he was bigger than the Beatles.
13 Trap Them – Scars Align: I heard about this record on NPR, of all places. Superficially metallic but punk; “GOOD LUCK pause LETTING GO” cf. Hot Snakes.
14 Metal Mountains – Silver Sun: Yoga cooldown.
15 Lani Hall – Love Song: Naive but charming.
16 Console – Cutting Time: A “band” from the Notwist programmer.

and keep me alive while I stand outside for hours handing out candy. I kind of love it. Last year far and away the kids were responding best to the metal songs I threw on, so this year I’m going ALL METAL. I’m pleased with how this mix came out, it starts out NWOBHM then skips two decades and goes right to the 2000s. As a side note, I’m impressed by a whole bunch of metal records from this year – Baroness, Secrets of the Moon, Nargaroth and that Dethklok album which you might think is a joke but the musicianship isn’t. Anyway, 140mb, download.

Wu-Tang pause tape #2 “Diabolical Brutality”

Two years since the last one? Too long. My love of Wu is undimmed. Download, 97mb. Tracks:

1. U-God “Wu-Tang” – U is always overlooked but if not the spine of the team the S1 vertebrae at least. Great new album with a fly Bloody Beatroots remix to boot.

2. Raekwon/Killa Sin Ron G freestyle – From way back. Biggie and KRS-1 (!!) were on the mixtape track too but I cut them out.

3. Wu-Tang Clan “Rock Steady” – Nice clan track.

4. Inspectah Deck, U-God, Streetlife “Semi-Automatic” – I had to work the INS in here somewhere

5. Raekwon “Kids That’s Rich” – Produced by Pete Rock, this was an OB4CL2 leftover.

6. Raekwon/Ghostface Killah “The Badlands” – OB4CL2 UK bonus track. Ghost begging to go in is claaaaasic.

7. Ghostface Killah “Holla (Kankick remix)” – Just a killer remix.

8. RZA “My Deadly Venoms” – This is RZA transitioning out of his Prince Rakeem supalover disguise and putting on royal Razor robes.

9. Raekwon/Carlton Fisk freestyle for Doo Wop – Who’s Carlton Fisk, you ask? Probably the most overlooked Wu-Affiliate because he was IN AND OUT OF PRISON a lot and couldn’t get in the booth. Too bad, because’s he’s great although I can’t wholeheartedly recommend 2004′s Inspectah Deck presents Undadogz because DJ Storm screams over every fucking track like DJ Aziz Ansari.

10. Shyheim freestyle – On the other hand, it’s hard to call someone like Shyheim overlooked when, you know, he was on stage with Biggie and Pac when he was six or whatever. In another world he and Big L put out a classic tag-team album on Rocafella in 2002.

11. Wu-Tang Clan & The El Michael’s Affair “Trumph” – This whole live session from XM Radio is wellllll worth seeking out.

12. Wisemen “Iconoclasts (Salute version)” – The Wisemen are the group that, to me, look most like Wu-Tang Clan: The Next Generation. Bronze Nazareth has a lot to do with that.

13. Method Man “Spy Hunter” – This is actually a Cappa track but I cut him out. Meth is bananas.

14. Cappadonna “Anotha Riddle” – Ah, Cappadonna. Always real. I almost put on a concert freestyle where he’s like “you might catch me coming out of K-Mart / I’m just like you.”

15. Masta Killa, Inspectah Deck, GZA “Street Corners (MF Doom remix)” – Doom makes it saucy.

16. GZA & RZA “Life Is A Movie” – Just a Wu-Tang Gary Numan interpolation. No big deal.

17. Ghostface Killah & Tre Williams “I Wish You Were Here” – An R&B warm-up for Ghost’s forthcoming Wizard of Poetry album. I hate R&B but how can you be mad at Ghost silky singing “What up boo / I get butterflies when we hug and kiss / do you?”

18. RZA & Masta Killah “Grits (alternate)” – “When I was small / we had nothing at all”

19. ODB “Forever” – This song has a million names, but whatever you want to call it, it’s the capstone of Dirty’s life in a way and it breaks my heart.

Straight out of a 24 Hour Fitness television commercial. But hey, I like girls on stairmasters.
03 Friendly Fires – Skeleton Boy
Friendly Fires are forgettable, but I thought this song fit the mix.
04 Apes – Walk Thru Walls
Apes, on the other hand, are the real deal.
05 Hot Chip and Robert Wyatt – Made In The Dark
Unlikely collaboration! I can’t wait for the whole EP.

13 TKA – Give Your Love To Me (DJ Shadow remix) (Clitwack edit)
Great little remix by Shadow circa 1990. I cut it in half.
14 50 Cent – My Heart
Fifty is so rich he doesn’t even care. This reminds me of toasting more than rapping because the disco plays out, which is kind of awesome. Rapwise I had to leave off Z-Ro Call My Phone and Lil’ Boosie Don’t I Act A Donkey, shout to Cocaine Blunts.
15 MGMT – Electric Feel
Was this a huge track from a huge record? Yeah, well, it’s a great song. I can’t recommend the Jim Jones version, though.
16 The Hives and Cyndi Lauper – A Christmas Duel
Delightful!
17 The Vince Guaraldi Trio – African Sleigh Ride
This is an outtake, I think. I personally can’t have Christmas without Vince.
18 The Whitest Boy Alive – Golden Cage (Fred Falke Remix)
Remix of the year. Makes me want to live.

I basically made this tape for myself, but I think the selection is good enough to share. It’s all Wu-Tang, or songs from members and affiliates. RZA’s genius is that the Wu is a whole musical genre unto itself; this tape leans toward the grimier middle period sound.
